When life or people throw their arrows and darts, what can we do? Being prepared for attacks is prudent, and being ready to offer a healthy and edifying response is equally crucial. We all can behave well and we all can behave badly. If one’s heart is not healthy, a lot can go wrong. Just as an unhealthy physical heart is a big deal, an unhealthy spiritual heart is a walking time bomb. This is how you can protect your heart and ensure that it weathers the storms of life.

Trust and focus on Jesus: A friend of mine often says that the best of us humans are still human. I chuckle when she says it, but isn’t it true? Human beings can try to be their best, but can any of us be perfect at all times, in all situations, and be as dependable as God would be? You know the answer: none of us can. However, God is all that and more. Make it a discipline to daily learn how to put your trust in Him. ‘Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding’.

Walking the earth with a sick heart is scary. Anyone who has had to live with a physically ailing heart would tell you it scared them almost to death. Let’s gain wisdom from them. One can be healthy by guarding one’s heart and setting one’s affection on God. There is no losing God. Truly, no matter how hard things get, we are assured that with God, we win. Instruct your heart to beat for Him.

God’s wisdom is amazing. You can think back quickly about the way you handled things when you went solo and how you handled things when you allowed God to counsel and guide you. The difference is always as clear as night and day. His word declares: ‘You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you because he trusts in you’. (Isaiah 26:3, ESV).

Stories About Mama

Embracing Her Legacy, Honoring Her Life

Contributing author: Stories About Mama is a compilation of narratives from ten authors whose mothers were born within a 30-year span (1924 – 1954), smack dab in the middle of the Jim Crow era (1896-1954) a time when many African Americans, women included, were sharecroppers.

Far too many Black women have never purposely engaged in healing; seeking to understand our mothers in full context of the time and seasons of life. This book is about the healing of Black women from the wounds we have regarding our mothers. To provide a gracious space to look beyond the pain and the shame of their mother’s stories and honor her by seeing her through the lens of grace and glory.
